Washington, D.C. (Nov. 7, 2012) – Across the U.S., bicycling is on the rise — thanks in part to cities like Fitchburg, WI taking steps to make riding safer and more comfortable for all residents and visitors. Today, the League of American Bicyclists announced the latest round of Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) and Fitchburg has been named a Bronze BFC.
“We are excited that Fitchburg recognizes that simple steps to make biking safe and comfortable pay huge dividends in civic, community and economic development,” said League President Andy Clarke. “Bicycling is more than a practical, cost-effective solution to many municipal challenges — it’s a way to make Fitchburg a place where people don’t just live and work, but thrive.”
The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. With this impressive round, there are now 242 BFCs in 47 states across America. The Bronze BFC award recognizes Fitchburg’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.
“Fitchburg embraces the urban cycling culture. We have used smart planning that capitalizes on our rich environment and scenic southern Wisconsin roads to provide leisure, transportation and recreational biking opportunities,” said Angela Kinderman, Fitchburg Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Director. Four of Wisconsin’s finest trails traverse Fitchburg—the Capital City State Trail, Badger State Trail, Military Ridge State Trail, and the Cannonball State Trail. “We also have a community that provides safe bike transit options for our workforce.”
Fitchburg’s award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 13 at 10:30 a.m. on the Capital City Bicycle Bridge over Fish Hatchery Road near Highway PD/McKee Road. Convenient parking is available at the Quality Inn & Suites located at 2969 Cahill Main, Fitchburg, WI 53711.
The BFC program provides a roadmap to building a Bicycle Friendly Community and the application itself has become a rigorous and an educational tool in itself offered through the League of American Bicyclists. Since its inception, more than 500 distinct communities have applied and the five levels of the award—diamond, platinum, gold, silver and bronze—provide a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve.
